Overview

 

At Coolflow Laser Welding, I specialise in precision YAG laser welding for components that are difficult, delicate or impractical to weld using conventional methods.

The process delivers highly controlled heat input, making it ideal for thin-wall materials, miniature assemblies, prototype development, scientific instrumentation and precision-engineered components.

Whether you require a one-off repair, a prototype assembly or ongoing subcontract support, I provide a responsive and practical engineering service focused on solving difficult manufacturing challenges.

My Overview

My experience has given me strong skills in operational support, technical problem solving, 3D CAD design, CAM programming, maintenance planning, testing, inspection, documentation, supervision, and process improvement. I communicate clearly with engineers, operators, suppliers, and senior management, and I am confident working in both technical and customer-facing environments.

Time for a New Adventure

Starting a new business is always a leap of faith. Starting one after moving across the country is an even bigger adventure.


After living in Hertfordshire all my life, my wife and I made the decision to begin a new chapter in Cornwall — swapping busy commuter routes for coastal roads, open space, and a sense of community, wasn’t a difficult decision, but it does take a certain level of commitment and planning. So I'm very happy to say it's been both exciting and challenging in equal measure. 


As a new business, my goal is simple, provide professional laser welding services with attention to detail and customer care at the heart of everything I do. I'm passionate about delivering a dependable service, honest advice, and workmanship that customers can trust. I've always found supporting the people around me gives good out comes for all of us.

My Back Ground

I am an apprentice-trained engineer with over 35 years of engineering experience, including 15 years in management and project leadership roles. Throughout my career, I have taken responsibility for improving production performance, solving engineering problems, supporting technical systems, and leading operational change.


In my last role as Workshop Manager at JK Engineering, I managed the day-to-day operation of more than 25 CNC machines across three departments. I introduced improved planning and reporting systems which helped achieve a 99.5% on-time delivery rate. I analysed machine utilisation and production performance data each week and use this information to improve efficiency and reduce delays. I also implemented improvements to quality, training, and workshop processes to support operational performance and staff development.

I managed a team of 28 staff, including four section leaders. I oversaw recruitment, training, health and safety, workload scheduling, and performance management. I would regularly solve production and maintenance issues by identifying root causes and implementing practical engineering solutions.


During my 21 years at James Purdey & Sons Ltd, I held several technical and management positions including Machine Shop Manager, Technical Manager, and Component Supply Chain Manager. I led production engineering activities, managed CAD and CAM support functions, and coordinated manufacturing operations to meet delivery and quality targets.

I designed and implemented manufacturing process improvements that reduced component costs and improved productivity. I managed machine maintenance schedules and coordinated testing programmes for prototype products. I also led reverse engineering projects where I analysed existing components, developed manufacturing solutions, and supported testing and product development activities.

I negotiated with suppliers and purchased machinery, tooling, software, and materials for production departments. I prepared technical justifications for capital expenditure projects and managed the installation and organisation of equipment during two factory relocations.


Earlier in my career at Graseby Allen, I programmed, set, and operated CNC milling machines, Manual Mill's and Lathes, Sheet Metal Press Brakes and EDM Machines. I scheduled work for assembly operations, raised manufacturing kits, and supported production planning activities. I also contributed to continuous improvement projects focused on increasing efficiency and reducing waste.


As a Technician at Karavale Enterprises, I built prototype circuit boards, programmed light guidance systems, and designed jigs and feeders for automated pick-and-place equipment. This role strengthened my fault-finding, testing, technical support.


I completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship and achieved qualifications including BTEC First Diploma in Engineering and multiple City & Guilds certifications in Engineering Competencies, Electronic Servicing, and Computer Aided Engineering. I also completed additional professional training in SolidWorks, SolidCAM, Heidenhain Advanced Programming, Change Management, and ACAS disciplinary and investigation procedures.
